St. Stephen’s Community House
St. Stephen's Community House is a hub for advancing self-sufficiency in our community. We are committed to assisting residents in the Greater Linden area to build community, self-sufficiency and individual well-being. With a mission to strengthen families and empower the Linden community to become a community of togetherness with endeless opportunities.
St. Stephen's Community House is governed by a 22 member Board of Trustees.
Founded in 1919 as the Barthman Ave. Catholic Community House, a neighborhood center on the southside to help new eastern European immigrants, Hungarians, Croatians, and others to build ocmmunity, share the gospel, and support workers in Steelton by offering social activities and wholesome entertainment in the evening. The building acquired was formerly a theater - 2 story with a large hall on the 1st floor. When Bishop Hartley bought the building, he asked the Catholic Woman's War Relief to operate it. In 1929 the name changed to St. Stephens Community House.
